One of the major achievements of the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre – W.TEC in 2019 was the expansion of her She Creates Camps to 4 camps across the Nation. By this, the vision of bringing the ultimate fun learning experience to many more girls across Nigeria is finally taking shape with the camps being held strategically around the country. The ‘’She Creates’’ Camp is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths) centred summer training program for girls was held in 2019 from July – September in Lagos, Kwara and Anambra States in Nigeria.
During the camps, the girls participated in technology workshops and leadership activities. Evaluations of the camps showed enhanced leadership skills; creativity; problem-solving and communication abilities in the girls as a result of attending the camps.
The 2 week fun learning experience for the girls, wrapped with memorable graduation ceremonies during which presentations of all what was taught in the camp was presented to proud parents and prizes were also given out to camp participants who distinguished themselves during the camp.
The She Creates Camp is a two-week technology program, designed to empower girls to contribute meaningfully to the digital economy and improve their economic opportunities. The long-term goal of the camp is to increase the number of women working with and using information technology productively for professional and leadership activities.
Target Audience:
The highly competitive camp is a girls-only STEAM camp targeted at candidates who are smart, curious, between 13 – 17 years of age and enjoy using computers to exploring digital technology.
The major sponsors for the camps in 2019 were: Sage Foundation, Oracle, Laureates College and Swift Networks, MaineOne, Kenneth Dike Memorial eLibrary.
