The Founder/Executive Director, of Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC), Mrs Oreoluwa Somolu Lesi recently was a featured speaker at TEDxMendeWomen event held on Friday, November 3rd in Lagos. The event themed: ‘’Yes We Can Build Bridges’’ focused on the development of our women.
Our Executive Director at the event spoke on the use of technology for the empowerment of our women and girls in our society. She started on the note of how not enough of our women are still not in the Nigerian tech space today by which a lot of talent is still missed plus the adverse socio-economic effect of such. To solve this she encouraged early introduction of females to technology and also connecting them with positive female mentors to build a community of supportive women and connect girls with insightful and inspiring work experience. She also mentioned that girls from an early age should be groomed to have bigger life horizons than just limiting them to girly mentality with dolls and cooking pots this she stressed limits a girl’s aspirations severely. Futhermore she presented the impact of her work with W.TEC on women and girls as she shared impact stories of young participants who have chosen career paths in technology and using technology for developing their business all theses she stressed were as a function of her work at W.TEC inspiring more of our females to the tech space.
