The Impact of W.TEC's She Creates Camp Revealed
In Nigeria, the gender gap in STEM fields has been a longstanding challenge, limiting the representation of women and girls in the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. However, the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC), a non-profit organization, has been on a mission to bridge this gap by empowering women and girls with essential STEM skills. One of their flagship initiatives, the She Creates Camp, has been making remarkable strides in nurturing young female talents in STEM. In this blog post, we present the compelling findings from a recent survey of past camp participants, showcasing the camp’s significant impact in inspiring and propelling young women towards rewarding careers in the STEM domains.
The survey, conducted among participants of the She Creates Camp spanning from 2008 to 2022, provides valuable insights into the long-term influence of the program on its alumni. With 65 alumnae responding to the survey, the data represents a diverse pool of individuals, ranging in age from 13 to 30. Among the key findings, it is heartening to discover that over half of the respondents, an impressive 96.9%, have been actively applying the tools and skills acquired during their time at the She Creates Camp. This demonstrates not only the effectiveness of the camp’s curriculum but also the practical relevance of the knowledge gained in real-life scenarios.
Moreover, the survey highlights a crucial shift in career aspirations among the participants. As a result of the She Creates Camp experience, 35.4% of the alumnae are presently pursuing STEM courses, while an even more significant proportion, 76.7%, have expressed their intention to study a STEM-related discipline in the future. These numbers speak volumes about the camp’s ability to ignite a passion for STEM and encourage young women to consider careers in traditionally male-dominated fields of science and technology. By instilling confidence and nurturing talent, the She Creates Camp is shaping the trajectory of these young women’s lives, propelling them towards exciting and rewarding opportunities in STEM.
