Six Calculators in One

Each percentage question has a slightly different structure. Rather than forcing you to figure out which formula applies, each calculator is labelled for the exact question you are asking:

  • What is X% of Y? — the most common calculation. Find 7.5% VAT on ₦50,000, or 15% commission on a sale.
  • X is what percent of Y? — find the percentage when you know both values. Your score of 68 out of 85 is what percentage?
  • Percentage change — find how much something increased or decreased. Price went from ₦2,500 to ₦3,200 — what was the percentage increase?
  • X is Y% of what? — find the whole when you know the part and the percentage. If 35 students represent 25% of a class, how many students are there?
  • Add or subtract a percentage — apply a percentage increase or decrease to a value. Add 7.5% VAT to ₦10,000, or subtract 20% discount from a price.
  • Marks / Score percentage — enter marks obtained and total marks to get the percentage. Shows the corresponding WAEC grade automatically.

WAEC Grade Scale

The marks calculator uses the WAEC (West African Examinations Council) grade classification: A1 (90–100%), B2 (80–89%), B3 (70–79%), C4 (60–69%), C5 (50–59%), C6 (45–49%), D7 (40–44%), E8 (30–39%), F9 (below 30%). This grading is used across Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and other West African countries for WAEC and NECO examinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide your marks obtained by the total marks, then multiply by 100. For example, if you scored 72 out of 90: (72 ÷ 90) × 100 = 80%. Use the Marks / Score calculator above — enter your marks and total, and the percentage and WAEC grade appear automatically.
Percentage change is directional — it measures how much a value increased or decreased from a starting point. If price goes from ₦2,000 to ₦2,500, the percentage increase is (500 ÷ 2,000) × 100 = 25%. Percentage difference is symmetric — it compares two values without a direction. The formula is: |V1 - V2| ÷ ((V1 + V2) ÷ 2) × 100. Use percentage change when comparing old vs new; use percentage difference when comparing two equivalent values.
Nigerian VAT rate is 7.5%. Use the "Add a percentage" calculator: enter the original price, select Add, enter 7.5. The result is the VAT-inclusive price. For example, ₦50,000 + 7.5% VAT = ₦53,750. The VAT amount itself (₦3,750) is shown in the formula breakdown below the result.
If you know the discounted price and the discount percentage, use the "X is Y% of what?" calculator. A sale price of ₦3,400 after a 15% discount means ₦3,400 is 85% of the original price. Enter 3400 in the value field and 85 in the percentage field — the result is the original price (₦4,000).
WAEC classifies grades as follows: A1 (90-100%), B2 (80-89%), B3 (70-79%), C4 (60-69%), C5 (50-59%), C6 (45-49%) — all of these are credit passes. D7 (40-44%) and E8 (30-39%) are pass grades but below credit level. F9 (below 30%) is a fail. For university admission, most courses require at least five credits (C6 and above) including English and Mathematics.
