Metric vs Imperial Weight

Most of the world uses the metric system — grams and kilograms. The United States primarily uses pounds and ounces. The United Kingdom uses a mix: officially metric for most purposes but pounds and stone remain common for body weight. Nigeria uses metric (kilograms) as the official standard.

Stone — a Uniquely British Unit

One stone equals exactly 14 pounds or approximately 6.35 kilograms. The stone is almost exclusively used in the UK and Ireland for measuring body weight. It persists informally despite official metrication — most British adults still think of their weight in stone and pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 pound (lb) = 0.453592 kilograms. Conversely, 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. A simple approximation: multiply kg by 2.2 to get pounds, or divide pounds by 2.2 to get kg.
1 stone = 14 pounds exactly. This is a fixed definition. 1 stone also equals approximately 6.35029 kilograms.
A metric tonne (t) = 1,000 kilograms exactly. A US ton (short ton) = 2,000 pounds = 907.185 kg. A UK ton (long ton) = 2,240 pounds = 1,016.05 kg. The metric tonne is the international standard and the one used in Nigerian trade and commerce.
First convert all to pounds: multiply stone by 14 and add the remaining pounds. Then multiply by 0.453592. Example: 12 stone 5 pounds = (12 × 14) + 5 = 173 pounds × 0.453592 = 78.47 kg.
A grain (gr) is one of the oldest units of mass, originally based on the weight of a grain of barley. 1 grain = approximately 64.8 milligrams. It is still used for measuring gunpowder, bullets, and some pharmaceutical dosages.
