About W.TEC Academy

The W.TEC Academy is an afterschool technology club, which presents technology in an engaging way, with the aim of attracting more girls to pursue science and technology careers. The clubs target girls, aged 10 to 17 years, who attend public schools in Nigeria. The students go through a practical and engaging curriculum comprised of programming with Alice and Greenfoot, Mobile Application Development, Computer Architecture, Networking, and Robotics.

Through their participation in the year-long technology clubs, the girls become more confident in writing programmes, developing applications and creating digital content. This programme was designed to complement the existing computer science curriculum in the schools, which tends to focus more on theoretical knowledge than practical experience.

Currently W.TEC is running the programme at select secondary schools in both Lagos, Ondo and Kwara States.

W.TEC Academy programme in Kwara State is implemented in partnership with Oracle.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

  • Teach the students to create technology and engineering-based solutions that solve problems in their communities.
  • Help the young women hone their abilities to work in teams, as they will work in teams on technology and engineering-centered projects
  • Help the young women develop marketable and practical skills in and an appreciation of technology, art design, engineering, maths and critical thinking.
  • Connect the girls with and prepare them for further education and career opportunities in STEAM and/or entrepreneurship.

About W.TEC
W.TEC is a Nigerian non-governmental organization working for the economic and social empowerment of girls and women, using information and communication technologies (ICTs). We have chosen to focus on this area because statistical evidence has shown that in most African countries, women’s use and knowledge of ICTs (to store, share, organise and process information) is lower than men’s, denying them of income-generating opportunities and the chance to network with others

W.TEC’s programmes will comprise of technology literacy training, technology-based projects, mentoring and work placement. W.TEC will also research and publish works examining pivotal issues related to how African women use technology, barriers preventing or limiting technology use, and strategies for more efficient technology use.
