W.TEC Academy Trains Girls Solar Technology in Ogun State

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) recently held the graduation ceremony for participants of her after school computer training programme for girls – W.TEC Academy in Ogun state. This phase of training involved  100 secondary school  female students select schools in Yewa North LGA – Obalaju High School and Joga Orile, also same at  Yewa College (Egbado) in  Ilaaro. The graduation ceremonies were held  on 12th and 13th of November 2020 at the respective towns .
The after – school programme which lasted an academic term was centered on equipping the girls with STEM related skills which include: Computer fundamentals, Graphic design and Electronics & renewable energy. They also learnt liquid soap making as an entrepreneur skill. These courses were taught by well-trained facilitators engaged by W.TEC.
The programme  final project for  participants,  the girls were taught how to create solar phone charger, Rechargeable lamp and Power bank which each student recreated. These projects were inspired due to the lack of adequate electricity in the residents of the students as well as the interest of hands-on project by the girls. The projects are directed towards solving environmental electricity issues.
At the graduation, one of the beneficiaries, Rokibat  Babajide, shared her experience and how she can recreate all she has learnt.
The W.TEC Girls Academy is an after-school technology programme for girls in public secondary schools, designed to inspire girls to pursue computer science careers.
This programme is designed to complement the existing computer science curriculum in the schools, which tends to focus more on theoretical knowledge than practical experience.
