W.TEC HOSTS 2018 SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK, EVENT.

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) hosted an event at the ongoing Social Media Week Lagos 2018 programme. The programme: DIY fundraising: all you need to know about online fundraising (http://bit.ly/2Djo61m),took place at the SMW Lagos Campus, Landmark Centre, Water Corporation Road, Victoria Island Annex, Lagos, Nigeria.

The Social Media Week is a global week-long programme, which takes place in several cities across the world simultaneously and which showcases the brightest and best minds discussing, exploring, debating and learning about the impact of social media on our lives.

The event facilitators were:

  1. Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi – Founder / Executive Director, W.TEC
  2. Katja Schiller Nwator – Founder, Philanthropy Circuit

The W.TEC event, DIY fundraising: all you need to know about online fundraising’’ taught the participants the following majorly:

  1. How to raise funds through building a community of online and offline supporters.
  2. The class reviewed how technology helps in building and strengthen online communities of current and potential donors plus supporters.
  3. Management of organization image, presentation, documentation and reporting.
  4. Furthermore the class illustrated the effective ways for organizations to position their fundraising campaigns to be more compelling to attract donations.

The masterclass was facilitated by The Executive Director of W.TEC, Oreoluwa Lesi and The Founder, Philanthropy Circuit, Katja Schiller Nwator. Between the two is a rich experience on management of non-profits and international donor relationships.

At the masterclass, Mrs Oreoluwa said “In choosing your Fundraising platform, you must consider reviewing your goals and decide on how technology will help.  Know what story you are telling and also know your audience”. She also said when using a fundraising platform, security is a must, strong imagery should be used, also make sure your donate button is bold on your page. She further made presentations on the various platforms to host your fund raising campaign for African non-profits, how to position your campaign, management of campaigns and accountability of donations received.

In the same vein, Mrs Katja added that, “You need to have a genuine narrative that will be compelling to potential donors and be transparent”. She also made presentations on the various shaping trends of online giving in Africa, the broad context of technology and giving, and presented numerous case studies on online giving campaigns in Africa.

The well-attended event had mostly women in attendance, who were medium and high scale entrepreneurs, student of universities, online enthusiast and the public at large, were treated to an interesting session.

The Q & A session was a forum, where the audience got to ask good fundraising related questions from the facilitators mostly on how to raise funds for different causes and the management of such campaigns.
