What Is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is standard placeholder text used by designers and developers when the actual content of a layout isn't ready yet. It has been the industry standard since the 1500s, when a printer scrambled a passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum to create a type specimen book. The familiar opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" — is a garbled version of a Latin philosophical text about the nature of pain and pleasure.

Five Text Types

  • Classic Lorem Ipsum — the standard placeholder text derived from Cicero, scrambled into pseudo-Latin. The most widely recognised placeholder in the world.
  • Cicero (Latin) — less scrambled Latin from the same source, De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum. More coherent than Classic Lorem but still Latin.
  • Pangrams — sentences that contain every letter of the alphabet at least once. Ideal for testing fonts and typography — each pangram exercises all glyphs.
  • Corporate Ipsum — buzzword-heavy business jargon ("synergy", "leverage", "pivot", "low-hanging fruit"). Perfect for mocking corporate slide decks.
  • Hipster Ipsum — artisan, small-batch vocabulary ("kombucha", "fixie", "flannel", "single-origin"). Useful for landing page mockups with a lifestyle brand feel.

HTML Output Options

Tick "Wrap in <p> tags" to get output ready to paste directly into HTML. Tick "Include <h2> headings" to add section heading tags between every two paragraphs — useful for prototyping article or blog post layouts where heading hierarchy is important for design testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lorem ipsum is a scrambled version of a passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. The original Latin discusses the philosophy of pain and pleasure. The scrambled version has no coherent meaning — it was deliberately garbled so designers would not be distracted by reading the actual content while evaluating a layout.
A pangram is a sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet at least once. The most famous is "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Pangrams are used to test fonts and typefaces because every character must render correctly. Type designers and web developers use them to preview how a font handles all 26 letters before deploying it.
When presenting a layout or mockup, using real content would distract reviewers into critiquing the writing rather than evaluating the design. Placeholder text lets the designer and client focus on visual hierarchy, typography, spacing and colour without the copy getting in the way. Lorem ipsum is preferred over repeated words like "text here" because its varied letter distribution creates natural-looking text blocks.
Generating by paragraphs produces complete blocks of text, each 4–8 sentences. Generating by sentences gives individual sentences joined together. Generating by words gives exactly the number of words you specify in a single run-on. Generating by characters gives precisely that many characters, stopping mid-sentence if needed — useful when you need to fill exactly a given character count in a design constraint.
Technically yes, but it is bad practice. Search engines cannot index meaningful content from Lorem Ipsum, so pages left with placeholder text will not rank. More importantly, real users visiting a page with Lorem Ipsum will assume the site is unfinished and leave. Always replace Lorem Ipsum with real content before publishing. Use it only in internal mockups, staging environments and design reviews.
